Why communicate well?

This essential skill is not on the curriculum at school, college or university and while we might take acquiring it for granted - like talking, eating, hearing, listening - it is more like riding a bicycle or driving a car – you can learn it to be better at it.

A degree or technical skills may play a major role in your progress but in order to optimise such valuable experience, it is essential to understand how to sell yourself and communicate effectively. There is today more competition than ever before so you need to acquire the best tools that are available in order to communicate what you want and what you can offer to your best advantage.

Before an interview or presentation or any difficult situation, people often say ‘be yourself’. However the majority of us become unaccountably nervous and anxious resulting in a feeling of mutual discomfort and misunderstanding. Learning methods of managing these unfamiliar emotions will empower you with the confidence needed to dispel inhibitions and come across as well as you deserve.

Why set goals?

One of the greatest pieces of research I discovered was a review of well over one hundred psychological studies on goal setting. It concluded that

“The beneficial effect of goal setting on task performance is one of the most robust and replicable findings in psychological literature. Furthermore, these effects are found just as reliable in field settings as laboratory.”

In other words, if you want to increase your performance then you must set goals.

By learning how to set goals and actually achieving them you will become more competent and fulfilled. You will begin to excel as your confidence and self-esteem increase. It is important to spend time exploring your values and abilities to make sure that the goals you set are realistic and attainable.
